A RESOURCE FOR GRANTMAKERS
Foundations in the United States have made grants in Africa since the 1920s and have a wealth of knowledge and experience relating to both Africa’s problems and promise. Nevertheless, most foundations funding in Africa operate in relative isolation from one another, limiting their ability to compare experiences, learn lessons, and develop partnerships for the greater good.
The Africa Grantmakers' Affinity Group (AGAG) is a membership network of foundations that are currently funding in Africa or are interested in funding in Africa. AGAG was established as a forum for foundations to exchange information and work together in an effort to amplify current foundation funding and promote increased and more effective grantmaking in Africa to better address Africa’s development challenges.
Membership in AGAG is open to both new and experienced foundations that meet the membership requirements of the Council on Foundations, but membership in the Council on Foundations is not a prerequisite for membership in AGAG. AGAG recognizes that some foundations both raise funds and make grants, but these foundations can only participate in AGAG in their capacity as grant makers. Fundraising and solicitation is not permitted at Africa Grantmakers' Affinity Group activities and members cannot use the AGAG network to solicit or raise funds.
AGAG membership services include an active listserv of grantmakers, an annual meeting, learning calls, and informal sessions on current issues in African development relevant to grantmaking and grant makers. AGAG also conducts specialized research on foundation funding in Africa.
AGAG is does not provide funding, nor do we assist with fundraising. If you are a grantseeker, please use our Search for Funding feature.
