promoting increased & more effective funding in Africa

AGAG plays an important role for grantmakers because:

There is limited access to public information about the experience, lessons and approaches that Africa grantmakers use.

Few opportunities exists for grantmakers who are funding in Africa to get together and share with and learn from each other about their work.

AGAG does both and is the only organization that provides regular meetings where this happens.

Our Vision, Mission and Values

Our VISION is to be a resource for foundations and their staff members to enable them to be more effective in their work so that they, in turn, can better serve their grantees in Africa.

Our MISSION is to encourage increased and more effective funding in Africa through sharing and learning.

Our Values:

Inclusion: We seek to ensure that all members feel welcome to participate in all aspects and activities. We value and respect a diversity of opinions, approaches, and experiences among Africa grantmakers. We welcome voices and ideas from the broad range of stakeholders working in African development.

Knowledge and Learning: We value information, knowledge, and learning about the funding of African development. We recognizes that both gathering and sharing information and knowledge are essential to effective grantmaking.

Collaboration: We recognize our niche in the larger African development community. We believe our niche is important and that relevant information and knowledge comes from a wide range of sources.

Contributions to the Field: We believe that the experiences and accumulated knowledge of our members is a useful and important contribution to the broader field of funding African development.

Our Strategic Directions

Building Knowledge

We are committed to creating knowledge about the grantmaking community. This includes mapping where foundations are working and analyzing strategic grantmaking approaches. Our primary focus is on U.S. foundations. We also aim to build knowledge within the organization about major development initiatives in Africa that affect the grantmaking context.

Sharing Knowledge

We are committed to creating networking opportunities for the staff of member foundations so they can more easily form professional relationships, share information, and explore opportunities for collaboration. We disseminate information about the field of foundation funding in Africa.
